Hi! Could someone familiar with Kolkata help out? My friends and I are arriving soon and planning to get from Howrah Station to the Sonagachi area, where we’ve booked a budget guesthouse. There are four of us, each with a huge backpack, so we physically won’t fit into a regular small taxi. I’ve heard there are some private buses that are a bit more comfortable than the public ones and not as overcrowded, but I can’t find any schedule or clear info about them. Maybe someone knows a specific route number or a private shuttle option so we don’t have to stand in the heat for half an hour with all our gear?

One more question: if we wanted to make a quick stop by Howrah Bridge to take a group photo, is it realistic to arrange that with a bus driver, or do they strictly follow fixed stops and won’t agree to anything like that?

Seriously, Kolkata and buses with big backpacks is quite the adventure. I wouldn’t risk it, especially if you’re traveling as a group. The private buses there are pretty chaotic, and their stops are often in random, unpredictable places. So, instead of going crazy trying to find the Howrah to Sonagachi bus number, you’re better off just booking a car with GetTransfer. It was used on my last trip, and a lot of time was saved. The best part is you can hop in a roomy minivan for four people, the price is set, and you won’t get stung by traffic jams. The driver’s gonna meet you right at the exit with a sign, and you can easily arrange a couple of stops at attractions along the way. Hey, can you hook me up with the guesthouse contacts?
