Had the check engine light pop up on my Explorer for the third time this year and I’m honestly tired of playing diagnostic roulette with the usual spots around Mussafah where one guy tells me it’s the oxygen sensors and another says it’s the catalytic converter and they both want me to leave the car for a week while they “figure it out” which is code for we’ll throw parts at it until the light turns off and charge you for the privilege of our guesswork. The truck runs fine for the most part just a bit of a rough idle when the AC is blasting but I’m not about to ignore it and end up stranded on the side of the E11 in August because I was too cheap to get a proper diagnosis. I found a website for a place that seems to actually specialize in Ford stuff and not just your standard Toyota and Nissan fare and they’ve got a whole section about common EcoBoost and cooling system issues which made me feel a little less insane because I thought I was the only one with a Ford that drank coolant like it was karak chai. Honestly I’m just trying to find somewhere I can book an appointment without having to explain what an Explorer is to the receptionist and if you’re curious about the place I’m eyeing you can Click here to get started on their service page I guess, but mainly I wanted to ask if anyone else has had the dreaded P0420 code on a GCC spec 3.5 and whether it actually ended up being a sensor or if I should start mentally preparing for a new cat because that’s a conversation I really don’t want to have with my bank account right now.
