Behind the Scenes: IWC Unveils the Dark Side of its Portuguese Collection
This collection features an all-black design, thanks to the brand’s exclusive Ceratanium technology.
IWC has consistently been at the forefront of material innovation. As early as the 1980s, the brand pioneered the use of ceramic in watches, launching a unique Leonardo da Vinci timepiece with a perpetual calendar. Decades later, in 2017, IWC further enhanced the performance of ceramic with its exclusive composite material, Ceratanium.
Ceratanium combines two high-performance materials: ceramic and titanium. It combines the lightweight structural integrity of titanium with the scratch resistance of ceramic, creating a robust and reliable case base.
This material was initially used in a special edition watch celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Aquatimer collection. Since then, this robust composite material has appeared in other core IWC collections, including pilot’s watches, and especially the popular TOP GUN series.
